California Won’t Legalize Online Gambling This Year

Online gambling in California appears to have hit a snag, with State Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg writing a letter to stakeholders to discuss the issue.

Stating that legalizing online betting in California has merit, but that “significant and unresolved issues remain”, Steinberg explained the obstacles that any online gambling bill would see within the state. These issues include Federal constitutional issues, tribal exclusivity, which games could be authorized, and the impact of online gambling on native american interests.

Stating that he believes online gambling may bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue to the financially strapped state, current proposals to regulate online gambling are not adequate and that rushing to beat the state’s legislative end of year would be unwise.

“We believe that well thought out, fair solutions to these differences can be reached, but not before the end of this legislative year on September 9th,” the letter read, which was written both by Steinberg and Senator Roderick Wright (D-Inglewood).
